One day in Annecy: the hour-by-hour itinerary

A day in Annecy is won or lost on one thing: the time you reach the old town. Before nine, it is yours. At noon, it belongs to everyone. Here is the day we recommend to friends who only have one — with the times, the distances, and what we deliberately leave out.

8 am — The Pont des Amours and the Pâquier, before everyone

Start with the lake, not the town. At eight, the Vassé canal is flat, the light skims the water and the Pont des Amours is crossed without waiting. Carry on to the Pâquier lawn: the view of the Tournette is better early, before the mist has left the surface.

9 am — The old town in the order that tells the story

Then head up towards the Thiou. The Palais de l’Isle, the arcades of rue Sainte-Claire, the quays: the old town reads in one morning if you take it in the right order. One thing to know to see it differently: the canals are not decorative — they are mill races dug to harness the water, six centuries of industry under the geraniums.

If you are here on a Tuesday, Friday or Sunday, the market is on under the arcades: the best place to put a picnic together (farmhouse reblochon, aged tomme, bread).

11 am — Up to the castle

Ten minutes uphill from the quays, and the castle of the Counts of Geneva gives you the whole town, the roofs, the lake and the Semnoz behind. Good timing: the old town is filling up below, you watch it from above.

12.30 pm — Lunch: fifty metres is all it takes

The quayside terraces fill first and are not the best. Six tells separate a terrace that cooks from one that sells its view; the simplest is to climb the streets rising towards the castle, fifty metres from the crowd. And if you did the market, the picnic goes on the Pâquier or in the Jardins de l’Europe.

2 pm — The lake by bike, as far as a beach

Hire a bike and take the greenway: car-free, flat, it follows the west shore. Five swim spots are within pedalling distance, with travel times and the hour at which they fill up. In summer this is where the afternoon is decided; out of season, the greenway remains the lake’s finest walk, minus the swim.

Not keen on pedalling? The beaches at Albigny and the Marquisats are reachable on foot or by bus from the centre.

5.30 pm — Finish up high

Two options, depending on the season and your legs:

• The Semnoz, Annecy’s own mountain, by bus in summer: from the top the lake appears whole, with the double curve of its two basins. Late afternoon, low light.
• The Roc de Chère, between Menthon and Talloires: an easy woodland loop, two viewpoints right above the turquoise water, almost nobody on weekdays.

8 pm — Dinner at 7 or at 9.30

Kitchens saturate between 7.45 and 9 pm. Without a booking, turn up at opening time or wait for the second sitting. Out of season, this is the moment for Savoyard food without sweating through it.

What we wouldn’t do

• The little tourist train: the old town takes twelve minutes to cross on foot.
• The restaurant boat at midday in high summer.
• The car to reach the lake: the bike is faster than the hunt for a parking space.
• Everything on foot: the lake is earned by bike or bus, otherwise you will spend the day on the quays.
