Lake fish in Annecy: four species, many misunderstandings
Féra, Arctic char, perch and pike: what the lake actually produces, who fishes it, and how to spot a menu that promises lake fish without serving it.
Tables where the bill doesn’t spoil the view.
Eating in Annecy raises one simple problem: the finest locations are also the easiest ones to fill. Along a hundred metres of quay you will pass one honest menu and three calibrated for people who will not be coming back. This section exists to spare you that sorting, by drawing a clear line between the places we like and the places that merely have a terrace.
Our criteria are short. We look at where the produce comes from — cheeses off the plateau, lake fish when they are in season, vegetables from the Tuesday market. We weigh the price against the plate, not against the view. And we go back at least twice, once during a busy service, because a kitchen is judged on a Saturday night in July rather than a Wednesday lunchtime in November.
Each entry gives the budget range, what needs booking and how far ahead, and the detail that counts: the back room quieter than the terrace, the plat du jour better than the à la carte menu, the kitchen that stops serving at 21:30. Where we have been invited to eat, we say so, every time.
