Lake Annecy Beaches: Which One to Pick, and What For

“Let’s go to the beach” means nothing on this lake: there are about fifteen of them, and they are nothing alike. Big urban lawn, village pontoon, cove under a cliff — each has its crowd, its hour and its purpose. Here’s how to choose yours, depending on what you’ve come for.

Annecy’s three main beaches — free

• Albigny (Annecy-le-Vieux side): the largest. A vast lawn sloping gently to the water, room to spare even in August, and the view running down towards the far end of the lake. The beach for families, groups and evenings that overstay.
• Les Marquisats, south of the centre: terraced lawns at the water’s edge, a more urban feel, and immediate access from the old town on foot or by bike. Ideal for the after-work plunge.
• The Impérial, below the palace hotel of the same name: long a paying beach, free since 2022. Belle Époque setting, and the closest position to the Pâquier lawn.

All three are lifeguarded in season — supervision hours are posted on site and on the city’s website.

The village beaches: where the lake changes face

Beyond Annecy, every lakeside commune has its beach, and that is often where the lake is at its best: Saint-Jorioz and Sevrier on the west shore — reachable along the greenway — Veyrier and Talloires on the east side, Doussard at the far end. The water: where it’s warm, and why

The rule fits in one line: the closer the bottom, the warmer the water. The Bay of Doussard, in the south, is the warmest in the lake — shallow, with no cold reservoir beneath, it’s a matter of depth. Off the big northern beaches, by contrast, the chill rises fast: jump off a pontoon and you cross the thermocline.

And the calendar matters more than the day’s weather: the water is warmer in early September than in mid-June — the lake runs weeks behind the air.

What we wouldn’t do

• Drive to Albigny at 2 p.m. on an August Saturday. The car park decides your day: come by bike, or before 11.
• Judge the water by eye after a storm. Clarity says nothing about bacteriology — give the far end of the lake a day or two.
• Ignore the flags and swim zones. The lake is busy with boats: buoys and marked zones are not decorative.
• Expect “beach” to mean sand. Here it’s lawn and pebbles. Children’s water shoes are not a gimmick.

There is no single best beach: Albigny for space, the Marquisats for immediacy, a village pontoon for peace, Doussard for warm water. The luxury of this lake is being able to change your mind by bike in twenty minutes.
