Annecy over the Christmas holidays 2026: market, snow, lake and castles

Christmas in Annecy means a lake steaming in the cold morning air, chalets along the water, monuments lit at nightfall, and snow half an hour’s drive away. Here is the programme as it stands at the end of September: what is confirmed and what is not yet — this page will be updated as announcements come in.

The dates

For all three French school zones, the holidays run from Saturday 19 December 2026 to Monday 4 January 2027, when school resumes. Two full weeks, with Christmas on a Friday and New Year’s Day the following Friday. Expect French families on holiday, especially in the resorts.

The market and the lights

• The Noël des Alpes market: the 2026 dates are not published yet. The 2025 edition ran from 29 November to 4 January, with more than 160 chalets from the Quartier du Lac to the Jardins de l’Europe: if the calendar is repeated, it will cover the whole holiday. • The illuminations: the tourist office announces the lighting of the Conservatoire, the clock tower and Notre-Dame-de-Liesse church from 26 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, every evening from 5 pm to 11:45 pm — dates marked “to be confirmed”.
• Father Christmas’s castle, in Menthon-Saint-Bernard, has not announced its 2026 edition yet. Last year it ran from 14 November to 3 January, with free entry after 6 pm.

Snow, 30 minutes away

By the lake, snow is never guaranteed. Up high, it is far more likely: the Semnoz (1,450 to 1,704 m) overlooks the lake, and the Aravis resorts — La Clusaz, Le Grand-Bornand, Manigod — are less than an hour away. The 2026-2027 openings are not official yet; for reference, La Clusaz opened on 13 December 2025, and the Semnoz bus shuttle ran daily during the Christmas holidays. The lake in winter

• By boat: a 1 h 15 narrated cruise sails the Grand Lac from 1 December to 28 February. The lake from the water, the mountains white, no crowds.
• On foot: the Pâquier, the Jardins de l’Europe and the old town are better in winter than in August. Our guide to the lake out of season says where to go.
• And no, it doesn’t freeze: the lake almost never freezes, even in deep cold.

Castles and warmth

Annecy castle and the Palais de l’Isle open in winter every day except Tuesday, with a lunch break — check public holidays before you go. The rest happens at the table: fondue, tartiflette and reblochon, with our pick for Savoyard food out of season.

A day across Lake Geneva

If you want a second market, Montreux Noël takes place in Switzerland, on the shore of Lake Geneva, from 20 November to 24 December 2026: a day trip, not an evening stroll.

What we wouldn’t do

• Book on “2026” market dates found on an aggregator. Until the tourist office publishes them, they are guesses.
• Drive without winter tyres. From 1 November to 31 March, winter equipment is compulsory on Haute-Savoie’s mountain roads.
• Pile everything into Christmas Eve. The market is best on a weekday, late afternoon, when the monuments light up.
