Annecy’s Markets: Days, Hours, and How to Buy Well

Three mornings a week, the old town becomes again what it was for six centuries: a market town. The stalls set up under and around the arcades — built precisely for this — and for a few hours the locals take their streets back from the visitors. It is Annecy’s best free show, provided you go at the right hour.

The days and the places

The main old-town market runs Tuesday, Friday and Sunday mornings, along Rue Sainte-Claire and the neighbouring streets. Sunday is the fullest — and the busiest. Neighbourhood markets fill the other days (Pringy early on Sundays, we’ve put it on the calendar more than once): there is a market somewhere almost every morning of the week.

The hour is everything: before 10 a.m., you get the full choice, stallholders with time to talk, and breathable arcades. After 11 in season, the market becomes a corridor of visitors. By early afternoon, it’s all packed away.

What to buy — and what to leave

The Annecy market is two markets in one: half producers and regional produce, half general stalls. Our sorting:

• The massif cheeses: farmhouse reblochon, tomme, abondance, chevrotin. Ask about the ageing — a real producer has an answer, a reseller has a price.
• Seasonal vegetables from the basin’s growers — recognisable by their short stalls, selling only what they grow.
• Lake fish when it’s there: féra, perch fillets. Rare and pricey, for the reasons we’ve told here — that’s the sign it’s real.
• To leave: the standard souvenirs and the shrink-wrapped “Savoyard speciality” found, identical, in every tourist town in the Alps.

The market as sightseeing

Even buying nothing, the market is the best hour to see the old town at work — and on a wet day, the arcades keep it walkable in the dry. The Sunday combo: market early, a terrace coffee as the stalls fold, then the castle or the Palais de l’Île in the afternoon.

What we wouldn’t do

• Go at noon in July or August. You’ll see backs and selfie sticks, not stalls.
• Buy the reblochon at the first stand. Walk the street once empty-handed, compare two producers, come back.
• Come by car. The market occupies precisely the streets you’d need to drive through. On foot or by bike, everything is easy.
• Mistake the market for a museum. Taste, ask, buy small — it’s living commerce, not a stage set.

Judge a market by who shops there: here, locals’ baskets rub against visitors’ phones, and that’s a good sign. Come early, leave loaded, and keep the reblochon out of a backpack in full sun — that one is lived experience.
