Annecy in September: The Month the Locals Prefer

Water still warm, quays uncrowded, golden light: why September is the best month by Lake Annecy, and the back-to-school events not to miss.

Ask a local for their favourite month by the lake: many will say September. The water keeps August’s warmth, the crowds leave with the new school year, and the light tips towards autumn. For anyone who can choose, it’s the best window of the year — as long as you don’t put the swimsuit away too soon.

The water is still warm

Here’s the paradox that surprises summer visitors: the lake is often nicer in early September than in mid-June. It comes down to the mass of water. Such a deep body warms slowly, but it also cools slowly: the warm layer built up over the summer releases its heat weeks behind — that’s the whole of the lake’s thermal regime.

In practice, in early September, swimming is still very much on, and the spots you can reach by bike are finally quiet. It’s also the best window of the year to ride the full lake loop: an uncrowded greenway, cooler air. The surface then cools through the month, faster after the first chilly nights.

The quays finally breathe

The back-to-school switch is sharp. Families head home, holidaymakers too, and the town suddenly sheds its August crowd. The quayside terraces, mobbed in July and August, free up. Lodgings drop their rates. And the busiest viewpoints can finally be photographed without the queue — the exact opposite of what we described for the peak of August.

September’s events

The month is far from quiet — on the contrary, it packs several highlights:

  • Fête du Vieux Seynod (5-6 September): traditional crafts, folk music and Savoyard tastings, for its 41st edition.
  • Associations and volunteering fair (12 September): the big back-to-school date, free, at Bonlieu — see our dedicated piece on the Annecy associations fair.
  • The Ancilevienne (13 September): the local run-and-hike, starting and finishing at Place Gabriel Fauré.
  • Lake Annecy International Triathlon (26-27 September): swimming in the lake, cycling and running along the shores — a spectacle even from the bank.
  • Annecy Paysages: the open-air contemporary-art installations stay up until mid-September.

The mountains sharpen again

August often drowned Mont Blanc in a heat haze. In September the air dries and cools: the peaks stand out again, and the low late-day light brings out the relief. It’s the season to go up the Semnoz in the late afternoon — with the first autumn colours on the alpine pastures as a bonus.

What we wouldn’t do

  • Put the swimsuit away on 1 September. The water is still good — the real constraint now is the evening air, not the lake.
  • Assume “everything closes.” Restaurants, markets, boats and lifts are still running; it’s the crowd that leaves, not the town.
  • Miss the triathlon from the bank. Even without a bib, the sight of the swimmers and then the cyclists along the quays is worth the trip.
  • Climb the Semnoz without checking the forecast. Autumn brings its inversions: sometimes the town is grey and the ridge sunlit, sometimes the reverse.

Frequently asked questions

Can you still swim in Lake Annecy in September?
Yes, especially in early September: the lake keeps much of the heat it stored in August, because such a deep body of water cools slowly. The surface then cools through the month.
Is Annecy less crowded in September?
Markedly. With the return to school, the summer crowds leave: the quays breathe, terraces free up and prices drop. It's the favourite month of many locals.
What events are on in Annecy in September?
The Fête du Vieux Seynod (5-6), the associations fair (12), the Ancilevienne race (13), the Lake Annecy International Triathlon (26-27), and the Annecy Paysages art installations until mid-September.
