Paragliding in Annecy: Why Everything Launches from the Col de la Forclaz

Look up on any summer afternoon by the lake: there are always wings in the sky. Almost all of them come from the same place — the Col de la Forclaz, a balcony perched at about 1,150 metres above the east shore, in the commune of Talloires-Montmin. This is not a local curiosity: it is one of the most renowned free-flight sites in Europe. Here’s why, and how to make the most of it — with or without a flight.

Why here, precisely

The site ticks everything a paraglider asks for. A gentle take-off slope facing the lake, near-daily thermals in season — warm air rising off the slopes that keeps wings aloft for hours — a wide landing field by the water at Doussard, and the scenery: the turquoise sheet 800 metres below, whose colour is not a filter, La Tournette at your back, the Bauges across the water.

The result: schools based here year-round, instructors who fly this site daily, and a ballet of wings that makes the col a spectacle in its own right.

The tandem flight: what to actually expect

No experience is required. You fly tandem, harnessed in front of a state-certified instructor who does the flying. What they don’t always tell you:

• Take-off is the easiest part: a few running steps down the slope, and the ground drops away. No jumping, no void beneath your feet.
• Flights typically last 10 to 30 minutes depending on the package and the day’s conditions — the thermals decide.
• The hour matters. Mornings are calm air: a gentle flight, ideal if you’re nervous. Afternoons bring thermals: longer and livelier.
• Book ahead, especially in summer — and expect a cancellation if the weather says no. A postponed flight is a good sign: it means a serious school.
• Bring closed shoes and an extra layer: at 1,150 m, as on the Semnoz, it is distinctly cooler than at the water’s edge.

Without flying: one of the lake’s finest balconies

The col is reached by road from Talloires or from the far end of the lake. Even without a harness, the trip earns itself: it is one of the few points where you take in almost the whole lake at once, and the terrace facing the launch turns any snack into a grandstand seat. In late afternoon, the low light on the water also makes it a first-rate photo spot — without the crowds of the quays.

What we wouldn’t do

• Book the day before for mid-August. Tandem slots go fast in high season — plan several days ahead.
• Insist on a fixed date. The weather commands. A school that flies in any conditions is a school to avoid.
• Come up in flip-flops “just to look.” The col is also the trailhead for La Tournette: mountain ground, even for spectators.
• Leave the moment you land. The landing field at Doussard puts you beside the warmest water in the lake — a swim is right there.

Paragliding is probably the most spectacular thing you can do here with zero preparation. And if you’re still hesitating, drive up to the col on a fine afternoon: watching thirty wings line up at take-off usually settles it — one way or the other.
