Annecy in October: the month visitors miss

September still keeps one foot in summer. October doesn’t — and that is exactly what makes it interesting. The crowds are gone, the forests above the lake turn russet, and the town goes back to belonging to the people who live in it.

What actually changes

Swimming is over: the lake out of season plays by different rules, and October is the first full month of that new regime. The water is for looking at, walking along — not for swimming. Days shorten, the light drops low, and the inversions begin: some mornings the town sits under a grey lid while the ridgelines are in full sun. October’s best moves

• The forests in colour. The Semnoz and the Roc de Chère reserve are at their finest: russet beeches, golden larches, and empty weekday trails.
• A greenway handed back to locals. Cycling around the lake without the August slalom — bring gloves, the mornings bite.
• The old town, even in the rain. The arcades were built for it: our grey-day plan works even better out of season.
• The markets carry on. The stalls don’t do low season — and the autumn produce arrives.

The Retour des Alpages

This is THE October festival: the herds come down from the alpine pastures and parade through town, with old crafts, artisans and folk groups. The 2026 edition took place on Saturday 10 October. What to skip

• Counting on a swim. See above — even on a fine day, the water has turned.
• Heading uphill on the town’s forecast. 18 °C on the quays can coexist with an already-cold pass: check the altitude forecast, not the one for the centre.
• Assuming everything is open. Some lakeside sites and restaurants switch to reduced hours or close for the season: check official opening times before driving out.
