September still keeps one foot in summer. October doesn’t — and that is exactly what makes it interesting. The crowds are gone, the forests above the lake turn russet, and the town goes back to belonging to the people who live in it.

Swimming is over: the lake out of season plays by different rules, and October is the first full month of that new regime. The water is for looking at, walking along — not for swimming.
